Cheesy larceny

Rewind to 2:00 pm today: I'm at D'Angelo's with Reis. We're buying a late lunch. Kid's sandwich meal for him and a large steak & cheese for me to share with Ebru. You will be asked this question a thousand times, please do not be ignorant when you hear it:
"Do you want cheese on that?"
My answer is always yes, because I love cheese.
The problem is that you are not being asked because the food seller is interested in pleasing you. No. You are being asked because it is their job to "upsell"- they are only interested in charging you an additional 79 cents for a 4 cent enhancement (cheese).
So my affirmative answer to the question is always followed by, "is it extra?"
It always, always, always, is (extra). Not only that, you will not be informed of how much extra unless you ask directly.
This is the closest thing to reaching into your pocket and stealing from you, but somehow they have found a way to do it, by making you reach in and hand it over yourself.
Caveat emptor!
I have a suspicion that this tactic is retaliatory.. One smart shopper loophole we have all no doubt discovered at all fast food joints is that nobody cares how many times you go to the fountain and refill your super-size Coke.. which begs the question: why did you pay three times more for that drink than you had to?
Caveat Venditor!
