My ignorance knows no bounds

Well no, not really. Just a startling and unhappy realization. For many years, I've been telling my wife that the bicycle racing community is a first class group, without exception. I've been telling her that all of us are mature, intelligent, dedicated, strong, disciplined... all of the good things that one would willingly expose his family to.. I've been telling her never to worry about who we encounter at Wells or Lincoln or Ninigret, that she can follow our 3 year old son Reis as he wanders person to person and says "Hi" to total strangers, without worry or fear, because they're all great people. I've been telling her never to lock the door when we're at a race, in case I need to grab something last minute before start, because bike racers do not steal. I've been telling her that "these are the people I want to associate with, there are none better".. I've been proven wrong. What lies I've been telling.. what many words I must now eat.. Regrettably, my dear wife reads this blog, and it's comments.. Do the math. I'm thankful my son can't read yet because if he could read, he'd be afraid to come to another bike race with his dad. So to all of the basement people out there, whoever you are, and whatever your results list or ranking looks like.. my startling realization is that it's time for me to stop pre-judging all bike racers, even the very "best" ones, as though they are all saints, completely free of bad habits or language or thinking.. How pathetically naive of me. More than anything else which has transpired in the past few days, this realization bothers me the most.. Our so-called tight knit New England "family" seems to have some serious identity problems.. kind of like Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, something I spoke about as an invited guest on NPR's OpenSource last fall. Everything's fine and dandy until you are openly critical, until you expose weakness, until you denigrate the status quo. Such fascism is something which the Turkish Republic is strongly criticised for. If you know a little something about Orhan Pamuk's recent fame and fortune, you will know what I mean. If you decide that you disagree so stongly that it's necessary for you to begin throwing your own feces around like a red assed chimpanzee, go for it. You will only be perpetuating the ideas which I've set forth. Better to prove me wrong so that we can share some relief.

I've recently had my name dragged through the mud, and my reputation knocked around like a red headed step child. Link. This is in spite of my best efforts to become a unifying factor by recording and sharing race video footage which people would otherwise have no chance of ever seeing..The above was originally posted at Bisikletci. I must say, that in two years of blogging here at Amerikan Turk, even with all of the hot-button issues and controversy and differences of opinion, the commenters who contribute here have NEVER been vile and disgusting as in the situation over at my other blog.

Dear Murat

I have just read the comments on your other blog. It seems like those people have problems with communicating their thoughts in a civilised way. I would not for a minute pay attention to whatever they had to say.

Keep up the good work.

Murat,

Thanks to your link on this posting, I listened to the Open Source program for the first time. I would like to discuss it, however, I don't want to bring it in here (while you are discussinga topic that's very near and dear to your heart), since the main topic is not related to the program.

Can you start a new topic to discuss the program? I looked at your archives for October 2006, and it seems like the program wasn't really discussed in detail on this blog. The program raises some very important issues, which are important for Turks and non-Turks.

The comment below was left by the AZ on my blog, in response to my comment above. I wanted to post it here, so everyone can see what a loser he is. He really makes the Azeris proud, doesn't he?

Are you always on your knees begging the nice turk to have a discussion with you.

No one cares to what you have to say. You are a worthless nobody.

Dear Murat,
it looks like some people really had assembled shite for a while, and in the first opportunity, they are throwing it. I am sorry for all this. I know that you like a lot cycling and the cycling community you were hanging out with. I wish things will get fixed soon. Apart from some exceptions, I believe an ordinary American is less prejudiced against Turks than an average European is...

Sean, glad you liked the program, which comes as no surprise, but you're a day late and a dollar short. That show is an embarrassment for me because Gocek hoarded the spotlight and the other journalist cursed on air, and I just sat there on my hands, not realizing that it ws perfectly acceptable to break in and interrupt. I spoke only when spoken to, like an idiot. Given another chance, I have so much more to say.

I don't know who "az" is, just as I don't know the person who recently assaulted me verbally.. Let it roll off your back. Permit yourself to hate them for a few seconds, and this will clear the way for you to forgive them. Be flattered that someone cares enough to follow your blog closely, and ask them: if they think you're such a nobody, who are they addressing and why?

Thanks guys for the supportive comments. I need some of that right now.

Murat,

All in the bike community are not jerks. Remember that. Keep up the good work.

KHATIRA TELMAN ORUJOVA, 8 years old…

Scars remained forever on a soul of this little 8 years old girl will grind a rock… She recalls that awful night…

We were asleep. Suddenly we heard a strange boom… In that moment, we observed neighboring houses torched… We ran down to tunnels.

How many persons were you?

My dad, mom and four children. My aunt Sevil was with us. Two neighbors and their two children… We spent four hours in tunnel.

Where did you get that you have remained there for four hours?

Our neighbor said that we are here for four hours. Then, a man named Shaig came up and said that other side of neighborhood in fire, get away to forest and we ran into there. My little sister named Khayala was in ma’s hands and other sister was carrying by my pa.

The night has fallen in forest. Dad said put your watch on six. We were stopped in Nakhichevanik. Guides has gone ahead to ask a route, but they did not get an answer. We remained in deep forest. When sun was rising they shoot my mother. Then, the bullets reached my aunt. She was seventeen years old. Her name was Sevil. My mother Irada was twenty six years old. I don’t know the age of my father. His name is Telman Orujov…

When Armenians shoot me, my mother was close to me. Her wound didn’t let us to run away. I was lying next to my mother. We lost our dad in forest. Then, suddenly I felt carried by a militia man to Agdam.

Khatira’s mother is not with her now to correct her saying. She asked me about her mother… She sent me I replied. She is in hospital of Agdam. She was so thoughtful when asking the surname of her mother…

“Irada Orujova” - came the reply. (I found her surname after she told her story in forest.) She shaked her head…

No. My mother holds her maiden surname. Then, tell me her hair, are they soft or short? I did not know what to reply…

If I would reply I could convince her. At least, I could to see her quiet while medical treatment… I was so embarrassed… That was the most awful tragedy… Why I couldn’t tell her mother’s hair or surname…?

Murat,

The Husband here. What a bunch of hate filled racist xenophobes you appears to have stirred up with all the "Borat or whatever your name is" comments. And once again one my pet hates thta these people are so brave they always post as anonymous. If you have such big offensive mouths have the cojones to back it up with your name, at least that way Murat can make sure he takes you out when his rim rolls on the next corner or are you all just such scared pussies. I dont know any of you but it seems to me like you guys have some serious issues you need to deal. Either that or grow up, all that rubbish about "well respected" blah blah, pass the sick bag please with attitudes like that all you really deserve is complete contempt. Or maybe you were all taking too many performance enhancers, steroids and blood doping do cause problems later in life!!!!

Bottom line, this is Murats blog, he can say what he wants and when you have the quits to break your anonymity then you might stop being pond life and have some form of backbone.

Man, you really are ridiculously stupid. If you had a life, you would not be discussing mine, and kissing up to Murat.

Murat dear, take some deep breaths and don't let it affect you too much. People can be strangely cruel for no reason. Remember that you always have more people with you than against you...and for those against you can always hope for something unpleasant to happen to them....like a papercut under their fingernail. :)
Take Care

Murat,

Getting back to the topic, I had no idea 'bikers' can be so vicious. Maybe those guys should call themselves the 'Hells Angels' without motors (but with motor-mouths.)

Gulay,

What does this comment have to do with this post? If your attacking me because you think I'm Turkish, well you are mistaken, I'm not.
However it's interesting to read your comments, and see how you continually degrade yourself by throwing out insults usually at a Turk.
Post facts not opinions.

What does this have to do with this post?

WHICH IS JUST PATHETIC on Seans part to post a comment such as that. As well, why are you not attacking him for posting such shameless comment.

anonymous (aka AZ)

you are an idiot. we know you are not a Turk, you are an Azeri. All you want to do is cause problems between Turks and Armenians, because then you can kiss up to the Turks and get some support in return. Your entire existence is based this idea. All your allegations, without any support (and you still haven't answered by question) are further proof that you are just a brown nose azeri.

You have overstayed your welcome (not that you were ever welcome).

Murat, Wellcome to the real world!

I am truly sorry that your innocence and trust made you look small in front of your family.

I have been there too often. Life is a learning experience, it will make you stronger and more aware.

Personal disappointments no longer break my heart. But it breaks my heart when my daughter who is such a beautiful, innocent, giving and exceptional soul encounters this type of experience.

they say "ignorance is bliss" for good reason, murat. with every bit of new knowledge, your point of view of the world changes, and that is discomforting even if it is for the better in the long run.
i read the comments on your other site and i am glad that you were able to let all of that roll off of your back. every person has good and bad days, and your blog is where you can comment about both. it's your consititutional right (aka 5th ammendment). keep it up.

Finduk O. said...

sorry. just wanted to add in a correction. freedom of speech is the first amendment (duh), the fifth is something you see on matlock all the time. at the end when the real murderer is on the witness bench :) sorry for the mistake :) but keep up doing your 1st ammendment right :)

finduk o, I think you should "plead the 5th" on this one.
